Have Dog, Will Travel - Clatsop Loop Trail
Today we continue our Have Dog, Will Travel series, with a review of Clatsop Loop Trail in Ecola State Park.
Overview

While dogs are required to be on a leash, this hike is great place to take your dogs. On the way up, you'll hike through many stages of a Sitka spruce forest. Along the trail, many signs explain the succession of the forest. Hikers Camp provides a large flat area to explore just off the trail before your reach the sharp cliffs and views of the Pacific Ocean.

Hiking down the trail, through the forest, you'll encounter mossy trees and many more views of the rugged Oregon Coast.

Getting there
The Clatsop Loop Trail is located within Ecola State Park near Cannon Beach, OR. From Portland, driving to Ecola State Park takes just under 2 hours. Hiking this trail along with taking a stroll along Indian Beach or grabbing a bite to eat in Cannon Beach will require a full-day from Portland.
Special Considerations
- Entrance to Ecola State Park costs $3. Bring cash to pay for a parking pass for the day.
- Dogs must be kept on a leash while hiking on the trail. This is especially important when approaching the top of the trail where sharp cliffs meet the trail.
- Bring water and dog poop bags.
- Indian Beach at the base of the trail is a great place for dogs who still need to exercise after the hike.
